Our impact blooms beyond the farms
Approximately 2,700 colleagues work daily at our farms in Ethiopia and Kenya. They are the heart of Herburg Roses and Nini.
For us, impact starts with these people. We believe it is important that they can work safely, know where they stand, and are treated fairly. We see a pleasant and safe working environment not as an extra, but as a natural part of the job.
Fairtrade Premium
We are Fairtrade certified. This means that our way of working is independently checked and that colleagues themselves decide how the Fairtrade Premium is spent. This Fairtrade Premium is an extra budget that is created because customers choose Fairtrade roses and pay a little extra for them. Together, we use this budget to support projects that make a real difference locally, such as education, childcare and healthcare.
Ethiopia
In Ethiopia, the Herburg Roses Special Needs School was realized with the Fairtrade Premium, among other things. Here, children with hearing, visual, mental or physical disabilities receive appropriate education in small groups. The school is gradually growing to a capacity of approximately 150 children. At the same time, we are working on better care facilities, including the realization of an on-site clinic, so that support and care are closer to children and families.
In addition, additional initiatives have arisen around the nursery, such as a food store where colleagues can purchase basic products such as corn, flour, sugar and cooking oil at an affordable price. This provides access to essential food and families are less affected by fluctuations in market prices. There are also educational programs for children from the area.
Kenya
At Nini, the Fairtrade Premium is used, among other things, for projects that help to better combine work and family. Hundreds of colleagues’ children receive support for school fees and the Nini Daycare offers daily care for young children, seven days a week, close to the workplace.
In addition, there are facilities such as a health clinic and training courses focused on health and personal development. Balanced meals are also offered via Fairtrade, with employees being able to purchase them for only part of the cost price.
