Cultivating with consideration for climate and nature

At Herburg Roses and Nini, our nurseries are located in the heart of nature. Giraffes and zebras roam our farm daily, which makes us extra aware of the environment in which we work and the responsibility that comes with it.

Sea freight

Our roses are delivered to customers in Europe and the United Kingdom. Wherever possible, we transport our roses by ship instead of by plane. By already paying attention during variety selection to which roses are suitable for sea freight, and thanks to the many innovations of our colleagues and partners, we are increasingly able to ship more roses from Kenya by ship. In this way, we reduce transport-related CO₂eq emissions by 93.7%.

Biological application

In our cultivation, we make conscious choices to limit the use of resources. We do this by investing in knowledge, our own trials, and by choosing varieties with natural resistance. Specialized teams work daily to test, improve, and apply sustainable solutions. Prevention is central. When intervention is necessary, we first opt for mechanical and biological solutions.

Our ambition is clear: Currently, we only work with FSI-approved products, and we often use an even stricter list of approved products, provided to us by our retail customers. We aim for a reduction of 20-25% per year, and our goal is to be able to cultivate chemical-free by 2030.

Energy and water

Due to the climate in Ethiopia and Kenya, we do not use gas. We generate most of our energy ourselves with solar panels, supplemented with green energy.

We collect water that is not absorbed by the plants, purify it via wetlands, and reuse it. This way, we prevent waste and handle water carefully.

IMPACT2030

Since 2022, we have been measuring our footprint so that we can gain better insight into where we stand and where we can take steps. We also follow international guidelines such as CSRD and CSDDD and continue to learn from the insights this provides.

Everything we do in the field of environment, climate, and responsibility comes together under IMPACT2030. This is the sustainability strategy of Dutch Flower Group, of which Herburg Roses and Nini are a part. IMPACT2030 helps us to maintain focus, substantiate choices, and continue to improve step by step on themes such as cultivation, transport, environment, and social involvement.
